A "Heads Up" regarding recent CBD developments:
Anyone who has even remotely followed the ongoing Cannabis / CBD debate and the official position of many US government agencies regarding their belief that any Cannabis derivative has zero medical application, REALLY needs to understand what is actually happening.
Start by reading the patent issued in 1998 to the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for "Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants."
Abstract: Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and HIV dementia.
As you are well aware, any company marketing any CBD product that make ANY claims whatsoever about using CBD to treat ANYTHING is breaking the law.
Naturally we make no claims whatsoever for our CBD product, as we fully realize that all of our many partners who are using the product are only doing so due to the fact that they love the taste.
Pharmaceutical Drug companies, however, are totally different animals, as they spend a fortune to have their products approved by the FDA. Once approved, those products become available as prescription drugs.........VERY expensiveprescription drugs.
Now, if you are wondering how this relates to CBD products, keep reading as you are about to be given a perfect example of just how totally ridiculous the so called "Health Care System" has become in this country.
For some time now a company called GW Pharmaceuticals and its U.S. Subsidiary Greenwich Biosciences have been conducting the FDA mandated stage 1, 2 & 3 drug testing of a new drug called Epidiolex.
Recently they had the results of their latest study published in the New England Journal of Medicine and that study showed that "Epidiolex significantly reduced convulsive seizure frequency in children on multiple anti-epileptic drugs with poor seizure control."
Basically the study showed that greater than 50% of the participants experience a drop of greater than 50% in their rate of seizure occurrences.
Now, any new drug that can produce those results with minimal side effects has to be great news, correct?
While the obvious answer is a big YES, keep reading.
As a result of that and other studies, on April 19, 2018 Epidiolex received a unanimous recommendation from the Peripheral and Central Nervous System Drugs Advisory Committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Association. This recommendation virtually guarantees that Epidiolex will be licensed later this year.
Here is where it gets interesting (or pathetic) though. Epidiolex is not a wondrous new synthetic drug. It actually a pharmaceutical formulation of cannabidiol (CBD) derived from a genetically cloned strain of cannabis bred to produce CBD and then carefully refined. GW Pharmaceuticals are about to be able to make legitimate, fully approved claims regarding it's ability to reduce seizures.
Claims that NO other non-approved CBD product is permitted to make, as according to the FDA, existing CBD products have no therapeutic value whatsoever. (They must, however, taste good, as that is obviously the only reason that hundreds of thousands of people keep using them month after month).
One wonders if the ultimate "End Game" here is to eventually have CBD classified as a prescription only "Pharmaceutical Drug". That would certainly make companies like GW Pharmaceuticals very happy as their pricing model is a little different to existing suppliers of CBD products.
Apart from Epidiolex, there are apparently another 10 or so CBD based drugs in the FDA pipeline that once approved will be able to make whatever claims they are approved to make.
As an example while there are already many good CBD products currently available in the $70.00 - $200.00 price range,Epidiolex is going to be a little more expensive.
While the final cost of Epidiolex has yet to be released, Wall Street analysts (who are generally obtain pretty accurate insider information) have estimated patients will pay between $2,500.00 and $5,000.00 per MONTH if their insurance plans don’t cover the costs.
Think about that for a minute, a product manufactured from the same natural substance that is currently available will cost between 40 and 70 TIMES the current monthly cost of existing CBD products.
To put that in perspective, if you purchase a nice, juicy organic apple today, it will cost you $1.00 - $2.00.
If next week, however, a pharmaceutical drug company released their FDA "approved" nice, juicy organic apple, it would cost you $40.00 - $140.00.
Same apple, just a slightly different marketing method and pricing model.
Before we end this, let me give you one more example of the totally insane prices the pharmaceutical drug companies are charging here.
Gilead Sciences Inc. developed a drug that cures Hepatitis C. You need to take one pill a day for 12 weeks (84 pills). That drug sells in the U.S. as Sovaldi, at a retail price of $1,000.00 a pill or a total treatment cost of $84,000.00.
In India, the EXACT same pill, licensed by Gilead Sciences Inc. to local manufactures costs $.4.00 a pill, or a total treatment cost of $336.00.
Welcome to the "Pharmaceutical States of America".
