Yoga obviously can impact our bodies, our minds, and our spirits, but one of the most unexpected things it has changed in me is my words.

As a teacher, I need to be mindful of my words as ways to set a tone, fill (or not fill) time, and create a safe and inclusive environment. As a student, I need to be mindful of my words to set an intention of living up to the Yama of Satya, or truthfulness.

Integrity is the thing I value most in my life - and am constantly striving towards, some days better than others - and so I've always considered myself as a very honest person. I tell the truth (my truth) and I'm proud of that. So Satya should be fairly easy to live up to, right?

Maybe not. Lately I've been noticing in my very wordy life how I'm actually nothonest a lot of the time. I will write "thank you" when I'm not thankful. I will tell someone "oh that's okay" when it's... not okay. I will remain silent-ish about my thoughts/feelings - even when asked - if I'm worried it will hurt/offend/upset someone.

And I think there is definitely a place for etiquette, and there are definitely much bigger issues in the world than pleasantries, but I also think that the seemingly small changes we make in ourselves can have very large impacts. So, I've been trying to be very mindful about what I say, and how I say it.

It's been an interesting exercise in creativity (learning how to convey something truthfully while also kindly). It's also been an interesting exercise in realizing that even the things we (I) think we're (I'm) totally already good at can always be totally improved.

So this week I invite you to join me: what can you speak more honestly about (to yourself, or to others?)?
