My kids are both competitive athletes, which means nerve pain is a regular occurrence in our household. Fortunately, I have a no fail solution, Vibrant Blue Oils Nerve Repair™!
My kids swear by it. Their friends swear by it. Communities of individuals suffering from neuropathy swear by it.
It has been my best kept secret, but I can’t keep it a secret anymore.
After experiencing my own intense nerve pain following a car accident, I can now personally attest to the immediate and dramatic relief that nerve repair provides. Just last night both my daughter and I were suffering from intense nerve pain. We applied Nerve Repair™ down our backs, soaked in an Epsom salt bath and went to sleep. In the morning, both of us were pain free.

Our sense of smell, which is part of our olfactory system, is one of the most powerful channels into the body. In fact, research shows that inhalation can be the most direct and effective method for using essential oils. The entire process from the initial inhalation of an essential oil to a corresponding response in the body can happen in a matter of seconds.
Have you ever wondered why cocaine is snorted through the nose or why anesthesia is delivered via inhalation?
It turns out that the popularity of ways people use drugs usually depends on how quickly it allows the drug to reach the brain and how long it takes for effects to kick in. This is one reason that anesthesia is delivered via inhalation and cocaine is most commonly snorted through the nose. It is interesting to note that inhaling a substance is one of the more rapid ingestion routes since the drug bypasses the digestive tract and, later, the liver, where the drug would be subjected to digestive processing.
When drugs are inhaled, they go straight into the bloodstream via blood vessels in the nasal cavity. Upon entering the bloodstream, the drugs travel quickly to the brain, thus eliciting a host of intense effects shortly after snorting.

Perhaps you’ve heard that stress is the root of all disease – it shuts down digestion, detoxification and immune function. And stress hormones, like cortisol, are corrosive to the body and contribute to systemic inflammation, impacting the gut and our mood
Fortunately, essential oils are uniquely suited to re-wire your brain to reduce stress. More specifically, stress triggers the following responses in the brain:
1. “Fight or Flight” Response
The Autonomic Nervous System has two branches – the Sympathetic “Fight or Flight” branch and the Parasympathetic “Rest and Digest” State. Stress activates Sympathetic survival response, which effectively turns off everything not relevant to immediate survival, including digestion, detoxification and immune function. In the sympathetic state, blood flow is routed away from the organs of digestion toward muscles in the arms and legs in preparation for flight. The sympathetic state also increases heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory rate. The vagal nerve serves as the on/off switch between the sympathetic and parasympathetic states. To rewire your brain to reduce stress, you can apply Parasympathetic oil to the vagus nerve to stimulate the Parasympathetic nervous system.
2. HPA Axis Stress Response
Stress triggers hypothalamus in the brain to initiate the hormonal stress response in the endocrine system. This response involves a three-part Chain of Command, known as the HPA Axis. HPA stands for:
A. H = Hypothalamus, a pearl size region of the brain that serves as control center for neural and hormonal messages received from/sent to body. Upon receiving a stress message, the hypothalamus signals the pituitary gland.
B. P = Pituitary is the Hormone Middle Man. It receives hormonal messages from the hypothalamus, and translates these messages into hormones distributed to the thyroid, adrenals, and sex organs. When triggered by the hypothalamus, the pituitary sends a message to the adrenals to produce cortisol.
C. A = Adrenal glands produce and release the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol’s main job is to provide energy to fuel our body through the stressful situation. Chronic cortisol release keeps the body's repair and healing processes shut down.
3. Limbic System Response
The stress state can be driven not only by physical stressors, but by emotional and thought driven stress. The limbic system, a complex system of nerves and networks in the brain, analyzes and filters incoming stimuli to determine if it is a threat to our survival. The limbic system categorizes all sensory input as either a threat or a non- threat based on past experience. When not functioning properly, a hypersensitive limbic system categorizes non- threatening stimuli as threatening, triggering involuntary trauma patterns and contributing to distorted unconscious reactions, sensory perceptions and protective responses.
Essential oils can be used to re-wire your brain to reduce stress by interrupting brain patterns, like thought patterns and emotions that trigger a stress response. Since the sense of smell links directly to the amygdala in the Limbic Lobe of the brain, essential oils can be used to reset the volume on threat perception, and help calm the over-firing of protective mechanism that either fire too rapidly or too often. When we rewire neural circuits in the limbic system, it can impact our stress response, emotion, pain, memory and physiology.

Stimulating the vagus nerve can help lessen symptoms of depression. In fact, recent studies demonstrate that vagus nerve stimulation “can significantly reduce multiple symptoms of depression, including anxiety, sleep disturbance, and hopelessness.”
The vagus nerve, the longest cranial nerve in the body, helps the body maintain homeostasis by regulating the function of various organs, glands, and involuntary muscles throughout the body
The vagus nerve starts in the brainstem, just behind the ears on the mastoid bone, and travels down each side of the neck, across the chest and down through the abdomen, connecting the brain with the stomach and digestive tract, the lungs, heart, spleen, intestines, liver and kidneys, as well as the nerves involved in speech, eye contact, facial expressions and the ability to tune in to other people’s voices.
In addition to playing a critical role in the parasympathetic “rest and digest” nervous system, the vagal nerve helps reset the immune system, switch off production of proteins that fuel inflammation and might help modulate the relationship between depression, inflammation, metabolic syndrome, and heart disease.
A growing body of evidence has shown that depression is associated with structural and functional abnormalities in multiple brain regions involved in emotional processing, self-representation, reward, and external stimulus like stress. In fact, research suggests that stress and inflammation initiate cognitive, affective, and possibly biological processes that increase risk for depression.
Stimulating the vagus nerve helps to modulate the activity and connectivity of key brain regions involved in depression and mood regulation. There is also some research that vagus nerve stimulation can also support conditions that are comorbid with depression, including chronic pain disorders, cardiovascular disorder, and autism.

Hi Tina,
Your body needs energy to heal. Energy fuels your body's internal functions and repairs, building and maintaining cells and tissues, and facilitating the chemical reactions that allow us to heal.
This means that before beginning a healing protocol, we need to ensure that the energy makers – the adrenals and thyroid are robust, so your body has the energy it needs to take on the additional stress of healing.
The adrenals glands produce and release the hormone, cortisol. Cortisol provides the body with the energy it requires to survive physical or emotional stress. Cortisol also regulates our energy levels, surging in the morning to give us the energy to start our day and falling at night so we can relax and sleep. Cortisol levels also drop during moments of calm such as meditation, which is one of the key reasons mediation is recommended to combat stress.
In addition to providing the body with energy, cortisol also plays a role in anti-inflamming the body which can help regulate the immune system. Inflammation is often a sign that your body is working to fight off an infection, and cortisol stops this reaction from getting out of hand. If you can’t produce enough cortisol, then your immune system may go into overdrive.
Essential oils can help return our body to the balanced state known as homeostasis. For example, when inhaled, oils directly communicate with the brain, signaling the body to respond with elevated energy levels. Essential oilsalso affect a number of biological factors, including heart rate, stress levels, blood pressure, breathing, and immune function that can return the body to optimal balance and energy levels.

Max was actually the inspiration behind Jodi’s journey into health and her book.
Here’s the backstory as Jodi shares it: “Max was a voracious reader who loved bookstores. Once we found new books for him to enjoy, he would help me look for an essential oil book that could explain how to use them to support organ systems and regions of the brain.
At one point after looking through countless rows in countless stores, Max observed, “Mom, it doesn’t look like you’re going to find the book you’re looking for. I guess that means you have to write it yourself.”
That encouragement was the impetus for Healing with Essential Oils. When Max took a road trip to Portland with his dad, he made a point of visiting Powell's bookstore and sent the photo of her book prominently featured on the shelf.
Please join me in celebrating the brief but powerful life of my friend Jodi’s son Max. Click here to jump to the sale and view some old movies that really capture his spirit.

I have been noticing essential oils mentioned repeatedly as a tool for combatting the coronavirus. While I would never call essential oils a magic bullet for all ailments, I do believe that essential oils with their anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-viral properties, can be powerful tools in combatting viral infections, like the coronavirus, which has been supported by research.
|
|
In this week’s blog, I share the most effective strategies for using essential oils to help boost your immune system and help you avoid being infected by with seasonal flu or coronavirus.
How Essential Oils Support Immunity
Research has shown that essential oils help us fight infection with anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties.
Essential oils provide the key components of the plants’ immune systems. They help the plants grow, thrive, evolve, and adapt to their surroundings. For example, they protect plants from bacterial and viral infections, heal injuries, repel unwanted predators and other environmental damage and help deliver nutrients to the cells. This makes them “essential” for a plant as they help the plants survive.
Essential oils play a similar role in the human body, perhaps due to our shared chemistry. Both essential oils and humans are made from three primary elements - carbon, hydrogen and oxygen – which make essential oils highly compatible with human biochemistry.
How Viruses Work
As you may know, a virus needs to find a host in order to replicate. It can live on hard surfaces, such as metal and plastic, where they can be spread when we touch the surface then touch our face. This is one reason it is important to wash hands regularly and clean surfaces with anti-viral and anti-bacterial essential oils. Viruses can also spread through airborne droplets.
For example, the corona virus is considered a respiratory virus which means airborne droplets are either transferred through close personal contact (less than 6 feet apart) or when droplets land on surfaces (think door knobs, elevator buttons, countertops) where you might touch them then touch your face. The virus can then enter your body through your respiratory tract, including your nose, throat and lungs.
Once a virus enters your body, the surface proteins of the virus bind to receptors on your cells like a lock and key, which allows the virus to enter your cells and trigger an infection.
Essential Oils to Protect Against the Coronavirus
As my friend Elisa Song noted in her detailed article on the coronavirus, “Natural agents that are immunomodulatory and immunoregulatory, and bring BALANCE to an overactive immune system, may be one of the best options to support patients with sepsis.” In other words, natural agents like essential oils may help:
- Clean surfaces - Reduce likelihood of infection by helping you sanitize surfaces
- Sanitize hands – to prevent the spread of viruses
- Support Immune Barriers - like your sinuses, mouth and lungs, to protect against infection
- Boost Immune Function - to decrease likelihood of fatality
- Immune Modulate System – by balancing the systems that impact immune function (including the nervous system and endocrine system), your immune system has more energy to function
- Protect cellular membranes and cell receptors – to prevent against and eradicate the virus
It’s important to note that blends of essential oils can be especially powerful anti-viral tools. There are certain components of essential oils that have been shown to disrupt the viral lifecycle at different stages. For this reason, blends of different essential oils can be more effective than single essential oils at preventing viral infection.

Essential oils can be powerful remedies for relief from pain and inflammation.
|
|
As you may know, your experience of pain is triggered by pain receptors - a group of sensory neurons with specialized nerve endings in your skin, deep tissues, like muscles and joints, and most of your organs - which send a message via nerve fibers to your spinal cord and brainstem and then onto your brain where the sensation of pain is registered and pain is perceived. The chemical constituents of essential oils can help modulate your perception and experience of pain.
Essential oils work as analgesics, which means they relieve pain, relax muscles, reduce inflammation and calm your nerves when topically applied. The chemical composition of essential oils – super small and fat soluble – allows them to bind to and inhibit prostaglandin synthesis (the process that creates/signals pain and inflammation). This is the same channel by which nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) work. This might be one reason that essential oils consistently test as effective as over-the-counter pain medications and pharmacological and clinical studies have demonstrated the profile of essential oil compounds as drug candidates.
In addition, smelling essential oils - through your olfactory channel - can also help modulate the perception of pain.
The Smell Pathway for Pain
Your sense of smell is directly connected with your perception of pain.
When you inhale essential oils, the odor molecules travel to the part of the limbic system known as the amygdala. Your amygdala is both an important mediator for pain reception and the part of your brain most often linked to the emotional aspects of olfaction perception.
Olfactory stimulation can directly activate your amygdala and modulate the perception of chronic pain processing pathways. “This direct connection may be important for survival due to the urgency of interrupting pain reception and danger signals,” according to Sarah A. LoBisco, ND in her Townsend Letter article Olfaction's Complex Connections of Emotions, Memory, and Pain Perception.
In other words, pain is a perceived signal that is either passed on through descending pain pathways with an associated emotional response or modulated, which can calm pain perception. Research shows that “pain may result from signaling disturbances in the amygdala… Therefore, it has been suggested that the amygdala may serve as a "hot spot" in supraspinal descending pain control, switching on and off chronic pain.”
“Furthermore, it has been shown that corticotrophin releasing factor (CRF) upregulated in the limbic structures is associated with neuropathic pain as well as mood disorders, such as anxiety and depression. This is likely to be independent of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis stimulation. Therefore, olfaction could potentially impact central pain response through modulation of physiological feedback.”
Your sense of smell, and the use of essential oils, is a powerful tool to help switch off the perception of pain.
